James P. Cannon (1890-1974) is the outstanding figure in the history of revolutionary socialism in the United States in the 20th century. His political career spanned more than 60 years. Active before World War I in the IWW and the Socialist Party, in the postwar period he became a founder of the Communist Party and one of its central leaders.
